There is a brand spanking new calendar! Hurrah!
Months ago, Eric Schmiedl came to me with a plan. He was tired of not knowing what the correct month was anymore, because he couldn't bear to take his old Eastside calendar off his wall even though the months had run out. Indeed I had heard this lament from many a friend. So we decided to do something about it, and make a second Women of the East Side Calendar!
The last calendar, made by the illustrious Woz and Vogt, raised over $6.3k for the James E. Roberts Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Fund met and surpassed it's initial $50k goal on 08/03/2006, meaning that it is now a fully endowed and self-sustaining scholarship. We think that this is FANTASTIC, and want to give even *more* money to the Big Jimmy Fund.
The calendars have been shipped by the printer...our tracking says we'll get them today! ...there is a limited supply! So preorder your calendar now! Look out for an email, but preorder pickups should be taking place this weekend. Starting Monday, April 14th calendars will be on sale from the lovely East Campus Fred Desk, for the low low price of $12! You can preorder your calendar online, now, to ensure you get one before they go! If you'd like us to send one to you, awesome! We'll do it, we swear, and might have even found a minion to deal with that for us so it happens even faster!
Yo and welcome! This is where you go to get any and all information related to the Women of the East Side Calendar. The bar on top should help you navigate, but we really only have two pages: this and an FAQ. A testimonials and statistics page will be coming soon. maybe. if we're motivated. We might even get more pictures up soon.
This is a thinly veiled excuse to ogle hot engineering and science chicks. More importantly, it's a fundraising effort for the James E. Roberts Memorial Scholarship Fund (it's an endowed scholarship in memory of Big Jimmy). The Women of the East Side Calendar is an 18-month full-color calendar populated with attractive female MIT students and alumni who hail from dorms on the East Side of campus. No, really! True story. We spent around 7 months taking...I don't even know how many photos, because Eric is insane. Let's just say that there *might* have been 6186 images shot... that encompassed 99.1 gigabytes of images... from 29 different shoots in 38 locations with 48 models! After we sorted through all 6186 photos, we spent countless hours squeezing as many of them as we could into our 40-page calendar (organization, photography and post-production of the covershoot alone took 15 hours. eric is a bit obsessive compulsive.). You'll even get to see some of the models we couldn't even fit into the months, on the back cover! We've printed up 750 and are selling them for $12 at EAsT camPUS Front Desk (or $17, which includes S/H through this website). All profits go to the Big Jimmy Fund. Buy it now.
To maximize profitability (and to give the psychos who decide to make the *next* calendar a little more time) the calendar spans 18 months: April 2008 through September 2009. For those of you playing at home; 18 months + credits + cover = 40 pages. The calendars are 8.5x11 folded (11x17 when opened) and are printed in full-color on high-end glossy paper. Also, the calendars are in a non-standard format: any given week starts on Monday, ends on Sunday and is annotated with MIT holidays and deadlines in addition to national and religious holidays.
Again, the calendar is good through the rest of 2008 and most of 2009! That means you can cut Miss February down from the wall and keep her in the Special Place while Miss March reminds you when Add Date is and Miss May tells you all about Steer Roast.
Now, stop and imagine 40 pages of hot geek girls. Skeptical? We've got some preview images and up in our FAQ for people like you!
Order it here. So you know, calendars will be $12 if you pay with cash at EAsT camPUS Desk, but we can't guarantee how fast they will sell! You can preorder them for $12 online to pickup at EC Desk. All mail orders (a flat rate of $17, because its just easier that way) will be serviced with USPS Priority Mail (because it's just as cheap as First Class), although we did optimize for how many calendars we could shove into a flat-rate envelope or a flat-rate box. We will probably process mail orders once a week for the next few months, so your calendar will come soon!
James E. Roberts Sr., known as "Big Jimmy," was a nightwatchman at the MIT dormitories Senior House and East Campus for many years until he passed away suddenly in January of 2005. He was a friend and hero to hundreds of MIT students. Frankly, we loved the man. There's a page dedicated to him here.
Jimmy was known for being the embodiment of propriety around the ladies (meaning that when the crazy nekkid chicks were running around on hall, Jimmy would run the other way). But we're doing this in his memory because he was the type to appreciate the sentiment. Of every calendar sold, approximately $8 will go to the Big Jimmy Fund. The last Eastside Calendar raised over $6,300. We hope to beat that record.
The fastest way to get your calendar is to wander on down to East Campus Desk and hand the Deskworker some straight-up folding money. In fact, that's now the only way to get one. (We'll make an exception if you want to donate a bunch of money.)
If you'd like to donate some extra money to the Big Jimmy Fund, please use the Donate button.
If you ordered one online and you're waiting for it to arrive, we will do our best to send you mail once your calendar is ready for pick-up or when it has been shipped. And we will also issue profound apologies for when we're late. If you harass us, we'll even give you your money back.
We're more than happy to take your money and give it to the Big Jimmy Fund directly. Donate $20 or $50 or $100 and it will go to the Fund. But! If you donate any amount over $50, we'll send you a gratis calendar (so long as you give us your shipping information). Google Checkout prohibits donations...so if you'd like to donate, you can "purchase" one of the "you're an awesome person" calendars below. You can also be a statistic and donate through the MIT Alumni Association; you won't get a calendar, but you'll still feel good about yourself in the morning. Outright donations were a big percentage of the proceeds from the last calendar - feel free to be as generous this time around as well!
*Donations will initially go to recoup the costs of calendar printing. Once the initial calendar costs are covered, all proceeds and donations will be given directly to the Big Jimmy Fund.
Donate $20 (note: this purchase does not include a calendar)
Right. We are in no way affiliated with the Corporation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Yes, we're all from MIT. Yes, those girls are real MIT engineers and scientists. Yes, the photos were taken on MIT's campus. But that's where it ends; we can't help who we are, and if the Institute knew we were getting naked for charity, they probably wouldn't like it. But you will. Oh, yes, you will.
The calendars have arrived at EC. Come by and get 'em!
If anything we're doing can said to be "appropriate", that is.
They're still available. 'Nuff said!
